New Build Garden Design with Outdoor Snug

Transforming a blank new-build Hertfordshire garden into a series of calm, connected outdoor spaces with planting, texture and year-round interest.

This contemporary new-build garden design transformed a blank outdoor space into a series of connected garden rooms with wildlife-friendly planting, outdoor seating areas and year-round interest. The design combines generous planting, carefully selected materials and distinct spaces for relaxing, entertaining and enjoying the garden throughout the seasons.

The Brief

Many new-build gardens start life as a blank rectangle of fencing, turf and patio.

The brief for this garden was to create something softer and more characterful, with distinct spaces for relaxing, entertaining and enjoying the planting throughout the year.

The clients wanted a garden that felt calm and welcoming, with plenty of planting, a strong connection to nature, and somewhere sheltered to sit outside even when the weather wasn't perfect.

The result is a garden that feels far larger than its footprint, with a series of spaces that gradually reveal themselves as you move through it.

The Design

One of the key challenges with new-build gardens is that they often feel like a blank rectangle of space. Through the design process, we explored how the garden could be divided into distinct areas for dining, relaxing and enjoying the planting. By considering movement, views and planting from the outset, the garden now feels far larger and more established than before.

Rather than filling the garden with hard landscaping, the design allows planting to take centre stage.

Large-format paving creates a generous dining terrace outside the house, while oversized stepping stones lead through the planting towards a secluded seating area at the far end of the garden.

A contemporary gravel terrace with a bespoke timber bench provides a quiet destination within the space, surrounded by planting and softened by ornamental trees.

The angled lines help draw the eye through the garden, making the space feel longer and more dynamic than a traditional straight layout. Learn more about my Garden Design service here.

A Covered Outdoor Retreat

One of the most distinctive features of the project is the covered outdoor snug.

Finished with soft-toned clay pavers laid in a herringbone pattern, the space creates a sheltered outdoor room that can be enjoyed throughout much of the year.

Comfortable seating, warm materials and views back across the garden make it an ideal place to sit with a coffee, read a book or unwind at the end of the day.

Planting

The planting was designed to soften the new-build setting while providing interest across the seasons.

A mix of ornamental grasses, evergreen structure, flowering perennials and small trees creates movement, texture and seasonal change.

Warm tones run throughout the scheme, with copper-coloured Heucheras providing contrast against the softer greens and silver foliage.

Lavender, thyme and other pollinator-friendly plants help support wildlife while adding colour, scent and seasonal interest.

As the planting matures, the garden will become increasingly lush while retaining its calm, contemporary feel. Explore my Planting Design service.

Materials

The material palette was deliberately restrained to allow the planting to shine.

  • Large-format porcelain paving

  • Pale clay pavers laid in herringbone

  • Contemporary gravel terrace

  • Timber slatted screening

  • Bespoke timber bench

  • Soft architectural lighting

  • Warm-toned planting palette

Together these materials create a garden that feels cohesive, elegant and welcoming.

"One of my favourite things about this project is that it doesn't feel like a typical new-build garden anymore. The planting has already started to soften the space and bring it to life, and as everything matures it will only become more beautiful.

I wanted the garden to feel relaxed and inviting, with different places to sit depending on the time of day and the mood you're in. It's a garden that encourages you to slow down, spend time outside and notice the changing seasons."
