Garden Design Consultation

Helping you move forward with your garden through clear ideas and practical guidance

My garden design consultation is a focused on-site visit designed to help you make sense of your garden and explore what might be possible.

Whether you've recently moved into a new-build property, completed an extension, inherited a garden that no longer suits your needs, or simply don't know where to start, the consultation provides an opportunity to discuss your ideas and gain professional guidance before making any major decisions.

During our time together, we'll walk around the garden, explore how you would like the space to look and function, and discuss practical ideas for layout, planting and materials. Many clients come away with greater clarity, renewed enthusiasm and a much clearer understanding of the next steps for their garden.

For gardens between 30 and 60 miles away, an additional travel fee of £60 applies.

What happens during the garden design consultation

During the visit I will explore the garden with you and discuss how the space might be developed.

Topics often include:

  • Layout ideas and spatial flow

  • How different areas of the garden could be used

  • Planting direction and overall character

  • Materials and landscaping elements

  • Practical considerations such as levels, drainage or access

The aim is to help you see the garden with fresh eyes and understand the possibilities for the space.

A professional garden design consultation can also help minimise costly mistakes. By exploring ideas and practical considerations early in the process, the consultation provides clarity and direction before landscaping work begins.

When a garden design consultation is helpful

A consultation is often the perfect starting point if you:

  • Have recently moved into a new-build property and aren't sure how best to use the space

  • Have completed an extension or renovation and want the garden to feel connected to the updated house

  • Have lots of ideas but need help bringing them together into a cohesive plan

  • Feel stuck and aren't sure where to begin

  • Want advice before speaking to landscapers or requesting quotations

  • Need guidance on planting, layout, materials or screening

  • Want to avoid costly mistakes before work begins

  • Are considering a full garden design but would like some initial advice first

If you're still deciding whether you need a garden designer, a landscaper or both, you may find my guide on the subject helpful.

What happens afterwards

Many clients book a garden design consultation simply to gain professional advice and clarity about their garden. The session often provides enough ideas and direction for them to move forward with their project independently.

Following the consultation, I'll prepare a short written report summarising the key ideas, recommendations and next steps discussed during our visit. This gives you something practical to refer back to as your project develops.

If you decide to proceed with a full garden design, the consultation fee is credited towards the design fee, meaning the consultation becomes the first step in the wider design process.

Some clients use the consultation as the first step towards a full Garden Design project.

Others are looking for advice on borders and planting and later move forward with a Planting Design service.

Many clients book a consultation after moving into a new home, completing an extension, or when they simply need help bringing their ideas together. Whatever stage you're at, the aim is to help you move forward with confidence and avoid costly mistakes.
