Tiered Front Garden Planting Design, Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire

A layered planting scheme designed to soften levels and enhance the entrance

This project focused on developing a planting plan for a tiered, north-facing front garden in Bishop’s Stortford. The aim was to create a garden that felt warm and inviting while working successfully with the lower light conditions of the site.

The Brief

The client wanted a Mediterranean-inspired atmosphere that would bring colour and energy to the front of the property while remaining easy to maintain. The planting also needed to provide privacy from neighbouring properties without making the space feel enclosed.

The Design

The garden is arranged across a series of levels, which provided an opportunity to introduce structure and visual rhythm through planting. The design combines modern, architectural plant forms with a vibrant palette of reds, oranges and yellows, helping to bring warmth and cohesion to the space.

To address privacy, a bay hedge was introduced along the boundary. This provides effective screening while maintaining a soft, natural character that complements the planting.

Planting

The planting scheme was carefully selected to perform well in a north-facing garden while still creating a sense of warmth and seasonal interest. Structural planting anchors the design, while colourful perennials and foliage plants provide contrast, texture and movement throughout the year.

Outcome

The finished garden offers a balanced and contemporary planting scheme that thrives in lower light conditions. The tiered layout, strong planting structure and warm colour palette create an inviting front garden with interest across the seasons.

“With this garden, plant choice was absolutely key. North-facing spaces can be challenging, but by selecting species that thrive in lower light and layering foliage textures with warm-toned blooms, we were able to create a planting scheme that feels vibrant and balanced. Evergreens provide structure throughout the year, while carefully chosen perennials and shrubs introduce touches of red, orange and yellow. It’s a great example of how thoughtful planting can bring warmth and colour to even the shadier parts of a garden.”
