Front Garden Planting Design, Ongar, Essex

A welcoming front garden designed to enhance the entrance and soften the space

This planting design project focused on creating a welcoming and well-structured frontage to complement a newly installed driveway at a home in Ongar. The surrounding planting areas were designed to soften the appearance of the hard landscaping while creating an attractive and cohesive entrance to the property.

The Brief

The brief was to design planting that would enhance the new driveway while bringing colour, structure and seasonal interest to the front of the house. The client also wanted the garden to feel welcoming and visually balanced when approaching the entrance.

During the consultation process we explored the client’s preferences in detail, including colour palettes, seasonal interest, fragrance, potential allergens and the desired level of maintenance.

The Design

The design focused on creating a series of carefully considered planting areas that would soften the edges of the driveway and frame the entrance to the house. Strong structural planting was introduced to give the garden presence and definition, while still allowing the space to feel relaxed and inviting.

The layout ensures the planting works in harmony with the driveway and pathways, creating a natural transition between the house and the surrounding landscape.

Planting

A bespoke planting plan was developed to suit both the site conditions and the client’s lifestyle. Fragrant planting was introduced along the pathway to enhance the sensory experience of arriving home, while a mix of shrubs, perennials and structural plants provides year-round interest.

The planting palette balances colour, texture and fragrance while remaining manageable and easy to maintain.

Outcome

The finished design creates a welcoming front garden that enhances the appearance of the property while softening the hard landscaping of the driveway. Carefully structured planting provides visual interest throughout the seasons and creates a strong sense of arrival at the entrance to the home.

“Front gardens play an important role in shaping the first impression of a home, and thoughtful planting can transform that moment of arrival. One of my favourite roses to include in schemes like this is Queen of Sweden. Its elegant upright form and soft blush-pink blooms bring gentle structure to the planting, while the fragrance is light and fresh with delicate myrrh notes. It’s the kind of rose that quietly elevates a space, offering a subtle perfume as you pass by without dominating the garden.”
